Germany: German malt production figures to be corrected by the Statistical Office
German malt production figures for this calendar year have been corrected by the Statistical Office (it never happened before).
They show now a production of 1,085 Million tonnes in January-July. At the same pace of production till the end of the year, the total would arrive at 1.86 Million tonnes, 175,000 tonnes less than in 2004, but well above the 1.7 Million tonnes, which seemed to be the year figure before the statistics were corrected.
Malt usage by the German brewing industry is estimated at 1.7 -1.75 Million tonnes, therefore the net surplus is not large. The country imported 180,000 tonnes in 2004 from its EU neighbours.
